Leadis Technology Releases a New Family of Inductorless 200 mA, Dual Output LED Flash/Lamp Drivers

Leadis Technology, Inc. has released sample availability of the LDS8620 and the LDS8621 -- a new family of inductorless 200 mA, dual-output LED flash/lamp drivers, in low-profile (0.8 mm), space-saving 3 by 3 mm TQFN packages.

"With the LDS8620 and the LDS8621, Leadis continues to expand its charge-pump-based product portfolio by addressing fast-growing markets in portable LED lighting applications," said Adolfo Garcia, senior director of LED Drivers for Leadis Technology. "Some examples of portable lighting applications include LED flashlights, flash/lamp LEDs in video and camera cellphones, PDAs, smartphones and digital cameras."

Consistent with providing high-quality, cost-effective solutions for the market, Leadis has joined with Seoul Semiconductor, a recognized developer and market leader of high-current, high-brightness white and RGB LEDs. "We enthusiastically recommend that our customers use Seoul Semiconductor's flash LEDs, especially the FCW301Z (in single flash LED applications) with our LDS8620 or the LDS8621," Garcia continued. "The multi-mode architecture of the LDS8620/21's inductorless boost converter with their LED's low and stable VF (forward LED voltage) and its high luminous intensity combine to produce a very high-performance, high-efficiency solution."

"We are pleased that Leadis has chosen to recommend our flash LEDs, especially the FCW301Z, with their LDS8620 and LDS8621 LED flash/lamp driver ICs. Leadis is proving to be a valuable partner with innovative LED driver solutions to complement our high-current, high-brightness LEDs," said Daniel Park, PR manager of Seoul Semiconductor.

The LDS8620 and the LDS8621 are not only optimized for portable lighting applications powered by Li-ion/polymer batteries. They operate efficiently from single Li/MnO2 batteries, from 3 AA dry cell batteries, and from fixed power supplies up to 5.5 V. To achieve up to 95 percent efficient operation, both products implement a multi-mode boost converter that automatically switches from 1x to 1.33x to 1.5x to 2x to maintain regulated LED current, in torch or full-flash mode. External component count is kept to a minimum (two, low-cost 0.22 µF switching capacitors and two, 1 µF bypass capacitors) because LED flash current is factory preset to 96 mA per output. The LDS8620 and the LDS8621 also incorporate Leadis' proprietary, ultra low voltage dropout PowerLite Current Regulator (PCR) technology which allows the inductorless boost converter to remain in 1x operating mode longer, extending battery run time.

Production availability of the LDS8620 and the LDS8621 is scheduled for Q3 2008.

Cost-savings and Compact ZEISS Stereomicroscope with LED illumination

Carl Zeiss enhances the performance of its Stemi DV4 stereomicroscope with a new illumination system. The Stemi DV4 on the C LED stand features integrated LED illumination units for reflected light, transmitted light and mixed light. The LEDs provide excellent light intensity with low power consumption and a long service life of the illumination system (approx. 25,000 operating hours). Thanks to white light illumination in daylight quality, the objects are visualized in high contrast and natural colors. To protect the specimen from exposure to heat, the LED light doesn’t contain infrared wavelengths.

These benefits of the Stemi DV4 on the C LED stand are particularly important when 3D observation of small objects is required in high quality and at higher magnifications, e.g. at routine workstations in biomedical laboratories, in industrial production and quality inspection, and for training in schools and scientific institutions.

Compared to the previous halogen illumination system, the C LED stand offers brighter and more homogeneous illumination of the object field – with considerably lower costs as power consumption has been halved and the long service life of the LED systems makes bulb replacement unnecessary.

The C LED stand provides the well-known, time-tested benefits of the Stemi DV4, such as 4:1 zoom range, standard magnification range of 8x to 32x and a 92 mm working distance. The Stemi DV4 offers the best optical quality in this class of stereomicroscopes thanks to mechanically corrected zoom optics, parfocal and distortion-free imaging up to the edge of the object field and eyepieces that can be adjusted on both sides. Attachment systems enable magnifications down to 5x or up to 64x and enhanced resolution. Additional benefits of the Stemi DV4 on the C LED stand include the out-of-the-box design featuring illumination in reflected/ transmitted/ mixed light and the possibility of flexibly upgrading the system with various accessories such as transmitted-light darkfield equipment or an eyepiece measuring device.

The Stemi DV4 stereomicroscope on the C LED stand permits the use of digital photo or video cameras via an eyepiece adapter. AxioVision software from Carl Zeiss is also available for image capture and evaluation.

GE's First Outdoor LED Area Light Out Saves, Outlasts HID Systems

The GE outdoor LED area light from GE Lighting Systems, Inc. is the first of many outdoor LED lighting systems the company will debut starting in 2008. It provides up to 60 percent energy savings, longer life and significantly improved light-level uniformity compared with traditional HID lamp sources and optical systems, such as a standard 400-watt quartz metal halide system.

High performance LED systems from Lumination, LLC, also a GE Consumer & Industrial business, enable the GE LED outdoor area light to deliver excellent system and application efficiency with up to four times the recommended service interval of standard HID systems, a 50,000-hour planned service interval for the GE outdoor LED area light compared with a 20,000-hour rated life and 14,000-hour recommended re-lamp interval at 70 percent of rated life for a standard 400-watt quartz metal halide system.

"As a global leader in white LED system technology, we're perfecting the GE outdoor LED area light with the aggressiveness that we applied in literally creating the LED refrigerated display case lighting category," said Michael Petras, vice president of electrical distribution and lighting, GE Consumer & Industrial

The GE outdoor LED area light, with its patent-pending optical design, becomes available later this year after significant application analysis and real world testing that's underway.

"We're garnering a lot of attention among retail and municipal customers because they understand the value of our testing rigor, our quality focus, our fixture experience, our optical leadership and GE's LED integration know-how," said Paul Morse, president, GE Lighting Systems.

The addition of outdoor LED lighting systems is a major expansion of GE Lighting Systems' product portfolio.

"Our strategy is always to give customers more choices," said Morse. "We're still innovating and delivering for customers who value traditional systems. LED technology simply provides a path to meet growing market demand for greater energy efficiency and lower lifetime costs."

Experience speaks volumes about longevity
Using LEDs as a reliable, long-term outdoor lighting solution requires consideration of a variety of design and application conditions that differ from traditional magnetic ballast and lamp systems.

The GE outdoor LED area light improves visibility and quality of light versus standard HID systems by providing a comparatively higher color temperature (5500K), a 70+ color-rendering index and a low-glare optical design. It can do all this with lower lumens and considerable energy savings because its advanced optical design leverages the LED characteristics to deliver light precisely where it is intended to go.

The low profile design of the GE outdoor LED area light offers an aesthetically desirable appearance while incorporating clean lines and a reduced effective projected area. Its optics create a more uniform light level for the on-site activities that require light, while reducing off-site glare and light pollution. The luminaire's low glare and high uniformity benefits promote improved performance in security camera operation, since cameras are susceptible to glare sources and work better with a smaller range of scene brightness.

The GE outdoor LED area light's optical system satisfies IESNA Full-Cut-Off criteria, while providing enhanced photometric performance.

Each of the outdoor LED lighting systems that GE will introduce over the next 24 months and beyond will exemplify not only GE quality, reliability and inventiveness, but also GE Lighting Systems' more than 100 years of outdoor lighting experience.

LEDs Designed to Replace Fluorescent Tubes

ilumisys, Inc., has launched the first product in a series of patented LED tubes, designed to directly replace standard T-8 and T-12 fluorescent tubes. The ilumisys MK1 product uses high brightness LEDs to provide efficient and effective light, and is available in color temperatures ranging from 3500 K to 5000 K, with a variety of optical diffusion options. High brightness LEDs are used in conjunction with well-engineered optics, circuitry, and thermal management to provide maximum light output with minimum power consumption.

Patented circuitry enables the product to operate in existing fluorescent fixtures, without modifications to the fixtures or ballasts, allowing users to simply remove an existing fluorescent tube and drop in the ilumisys MK1 product. ilumisys LED direct replacements also run directly from 110 VAC or other building line currents as specified.

“This product is the ideal solution to initiate a movement from standard fluorescent lighting to environmentally friendly solid-state lighting,” said Dave Simon, president of ilumisys. “The ilumisys MK1 is an easy one-for-one replacement product. It can be used in the billions of existing installed fluorescent fixtures, across a variety of industries, helping businesses easily transition their operations to SSL without incurring costly infrastructure changes.”

This next generation solid state lighting offers an easy transition from traditional fluorescent lighting, while taking full advantage of attributes of light emitting diodes including long life, temperature robustness, vibration tolerance and energy efficiency.

In addition to providing an energy efficient alternative, unlike the fluorescent tubes they replace, the ilumisys MK1 tubes are mercury-free. The 500 to 600 million fluorescent tubes discarded annually in the United States introduce an estimated two to four tons of mercury to the environment1, despite industry and government efforts to limit mercury content and encourage recycling.

MK1 products are currently available on an installation-specific basis direct from ilumisys. Interested parties should e-mail info@ilumisys.com. The ilumisys technical team will work to specify the right product based on intended use, providing facility-based proposals for improved lighting and energy savings. Solei Systems, Inc. Announces Issuance of Patent on Tanning Technology

Solei Systems, Inc. has received issuance of yet another patent for its LED tanning technology.

LED tanning will change the entire tanning industry. Semiconductor LEDs, until recently used mainly as simple indicator lamps in electronics and toys, have become as bright and efficient as incandescent bulbs. They have already begun to replace light bulbs in many applications, particularly those requiring ultra long life, durability, compactness, cool operation and/or directionality (e.g., traffic lights, automotive headlamps and outdoor displays).

Solei Systems' long-awaited UV LED tanning bed is planned to be unveiled later this year. The new technology reduces electricity and air conditioning consumption by approximately 80 percent. These energy savings, combined with "no more bulb changes," greatly reduce a salon's overhead and increases its profitability. In addition, the average life of an LED is about 100,000 hours instead of the typical 700 hours for a tanning bulb. This translates to about 20 years of use before ever needing to change the LEDs.

LED tanning also gives a much more consistent tan. The high demand for this new technology is anticipated to be overwhelming and the Company is initially only going to sell these new tanning machines to salons that have already purchased a spray tan or light therapy machine from the company.
