Letters to the Editor

December 9, 2008

Dear Editor,

We appreciate your publication and how it promotes and supports the integration of LED technology into today’s market, however, publishing Kim Lighting's “white paper” in your November 2008 eNewsletter was a disservice to your readers. The defining principle of a white paper is to educate and inform readers from an unbiased and factual point of view. Kim Lighting’s paper does none of these things and is based more on opinions and out of date information, than accuracy.

Since Kim Lighting first published this paper in May 2008, they have corrected the substantial and very misleading data in “Manufacturer B’s” photometric reports, yet left many of the conclusions based on those errors intact. Also disappointing is that it does not accurately apply IESNA standards for evaluating solid-state lighting products. It’s clear by the lack of knowledge exemplified in the paper; many incumbent lighting manufacturers are simply not ready or prepared to make the change to a technology that is defining the future of our industry.

Please direct readers to Beta Lighting’s official response that addresses the multitude of inaccurate conclusions, misleading statements, and opinions contained within the Kim Lighting document. Visiting one of the hundreds of successful BetaLED installations worldwide refutes any conclusions reached by Kim Lighting, which are more opinions that have been influenced by factors other than science.

Misrepresentation and inaccurate findings of LED products do not serve the best interest of your readers, the industry and its clients. Ultimately, we are all looking for the best innovative lighting solutions available but this is not the way to achieve this goal.

Best Regards,

Alan J. Ruud, P.E.
President, CEO
Beta Lighting, a Ruud Lighting Company
